Summary
In Part One, Chapter 10, Jim and Huck travel on the river by night and forage on land during the day (65). By the fire one night, Huck asks why Jim does not go to Illinois to be a free man. Jim explains that he does not want to leave Huck. Another night, the companions come across a shipwreck. Jim keeps watch while Huck climbs on board. He emerges frantic, insisting that they leave. He overheard robbers on board threatening to kill each other. He shows Jim the loot he procured. Jim is thrilled to see books in the bag. Huck does not know that he can read, and he lies saying he likes the way the books feel.
