Summary

In Part One, Chapter 1, Jim waits outside Miss Watson’s door and hears Huck and Tom playing nearby. Because they are pretending he is “either a villain or prey,” he calls out to them (9). The boys steal his hat and hang it on a nail, guessing he will think a witch did it.

Miss Watson emerges and asks Jim to fix her step. She questions him about being in Judge Thatcher’s library, as some of the books were moved. Jim jokes that he has no use for books. Before he leaves, Miss Watson gives him cornbread to bring back to his wife Sadie.

Jim brings the bread home to Sadie and his daughter Lizzie. Afterwards, he meets his companions Doris and Old Luke by the fire. They talk about a runaway who was caught. Jim thinks about his own story...
