Summary
Chapter 23 Introduces the character Leonard Schmidt who used to be a successful lawyer from a wealthy family but had been imprisoned in the ghetto due to having distant Jewish ancestry. He tried to wear his iron cross in the ghetto but it was taken away from him. Jacob subtly drops the news that his radio is no longer functioning, much to Leonard’s disappointment. A guard nicknamed the Whistle yells to Herschel about not touching a certain box car. Herschel reports hearing voices from the box car. Herschel talks to them discreetly, telling them to hold on because the Russians are coming. Herschel is shot by the guards for touching the box car and takes off his hat revealing his hair before he dies. The narrator also reveals that his wife Hannah was executed in front of a tree with a single shot. Jacob...
