Summary
In “The Desk” Jackself finds himself back in school once more, imagining a conversation between himself and Jeremy Wren when his teacher asks him if he has anything to share with the class. Jackself says no and the teacher tells him to put his hands on his desk where she can see them. Jackself begins thinking about the desk and the things inside of it that Jeremy Wren bequeathed to him. “I didn’t bequeath you anything,” Wren says to Jackself, and Jackself asks Wren if he was planning to spend his death doing his math homework (57). Wren replies, “it’s not long enough,” and Jackself laughs out loud, prompting the teacher to yell at him again (57). Jackself tells the class it’s Jeremy and all the other students seem afraid.
