Summary
Jack considers bringing Della to the dance studio to spend a few hours with her there. Fearing that this might somehow harm her, he spends the night there by himself first to make sure that it is safe. The stress of the studio leads him to drink, and he imagines that Della is there. He visualizes the girl in Chicago and her baby, and what Della would think if she knew. Overcome by the stress of being in the dark studio, he tries to find the door. He becomes extremely fearful that he has ruined Della’s life and considers ending their relationship for her sake.
Jack goes to visit Della at her house. Della tells Jack that she had been praying that he would visit, and mentions that she is going to Memphis to talk to her father. While she is in Memphis...
