Summary
Jack realizes that Della could have easily left the cemetery if she had just asked the guard, and harmed her by not telling her to do so. He insists that he does not mean to harm her. Della responds that she is not scared of him, and is actually full of rage herself. She comments that she does not necessarily want Jack to reform himself; she only wants him to stay alive. He insists that reform involves too much resistance, and that life is simply easier the way it is. She observes that he lives like someone who has died already.
Della mentions the importance of Jesus as a reminder to see the beauty in life. Jack resists her efforts to convince him of this point. Morning birds begin to wake up, and he thinks about how he should leave her alone to her...
