Nilanjana

Nilanjana is the main protagonist of the novel. She is an outsider who came to Night Vale four years before the beginning of the story because she believed it to be the most scientifically fascinating place in America. She works in a lab in the town where, unlike her colleagues who pursue science for fame and glory, she seeks to make important discoveries that will aid in the betterment of the community. She has a very difficult time fitting in in the town, as she has trouble reconciling her desire for neatness and rational order with the utter chaos and sporadic reality that exists in Night Vale. Even after four years of living in the town she feels as though she is an outsider, and she has been unable to form any meaningful or lasting relationships with her peers.
