Doremus Jessup
Doremus Jessup is the main protagonist of the novel. He is approximately 60 years old during the events of the novel. He is a journalist and serves as editor for the Vermont newspaper called “The Daily Informer.” He is a resident of Fort Beulah, Vermont and lives with his wife Emma and his youngest daughter Cecilia. He is also the father of Mary Greenhill (née Jessup) and lawyer Philip Jessup.
Doremus Jessup is a traditional liberal who is very much opposed to Buzz Windrip’s fascist rule. In response to Windrip’s ascent to power, Doremus writes anti-Windrip editorials in The Informer and eventually joins an underground group of communists working to oppose Windrip. Doremus is eventually arrested and then sent to a concentration camp, but the rebels eventually set him free and bring him to safety in Canada. At the end of the novel, Doremus joins...
