Summary
Chapter 40 is titled “Ayatollah Khomeini.” Miss DeAngelo asks Zomorod to give an oral report on what is currently happening in Iran. Zomorod does not want to, but agrees.
Chapter 41 is titled “Allo, Allo.” Dr. Klein visits and asks Mohsen about Iran. Zomorod hates the attention but Mohsen provides some history. He says the U.S. and British governments overthrew a previous ruler and put the shah in power because “he was willing to do whatever they wanted” (149). He was unpopular with the Iranian people because of that. The shah eventually began implementing some reforms, including more freedoms and opportunities for women, all funded by oil money that was supposed to “spread” to all in the country. Instead, only the wealthy benefited. Khomeini was outspoken against the shah and was exiled, but has now returned to Iran.
