Chapters 4-7 Summary
Shannon, Brandy, and their male companion are stopped at the Canadian border as they are attempting to cross and return to the West Coast. Brandy tells the border guard wild stories about their identities, making him believe they are part of a televangelist family. When the guard insists he will need to see their passports, Brandy freshens her lipstick and promises to get them out of this mess. Shannon's mind wanders, and she begins thinking back to one afternoon while she and Evie were at Brumbach's Department Store. Evie and Shannon used to like to hang out in the furniture displays, putting on impromptu dramas for the other shoppers. Shannon remembers one time in particular when Evie attempts to get Shannon to admit that she did not know for certain that her brother was dead.
