Paris
Paris is the central location for most of the novel. As Jean attempts to investigate the disappearance of Noëlle, he moves about the city to different locations as he tracks down places she frequented and people she might have known. Several key locations throughout the city become important to the case as they are repeatedly brought up by witnesses Jean speaks with. Jean repeatedly visits the post office looking for mail addressed to Noëlle, he hangs out at cafes where Noëlle used to spend time, and he is constantly hearing about the La Marine Dance Club from different characters, though he is never shown going inside the building. Noëlle worked at Lancel, a leather goods shop on the other side of the city from her apartment. She hated the commute, but enjoyed her job and her coworkers.
