Summary

In the sixth chapter, Jean remembers how he had passed by Lancel about two years after quitting the Hutte Agency. He decided to walk inside and ask if anyone had information about Noëlle. One woman said she knew her and offered to meet him at a café across the street after her shift ended. He went to the café and realized it was one that he had claimed to have had coffee with Noëlle when he was lying to Gérard two years earlier. He wondered if he really had had coffee with Noëlle. Since memory can be faulty, he wondered if he had perhaps been so obsessed with the case because Noëlle reminded him of someone he had once known. The woman from Lancel, Françoise Steur, met him and asked him to walk her to the metro...
