Summary
In Chapter 3, Mia’s life was changed one day when she was helping the children at school during recess. She heard shouts from the apple orchard and then silence. Evangeline told Mia a worker had been crushed when a truck backed over her. Mia saw men carrying a woman’s body. She recognized her mother’s red boots. Just a few days earlier, she had begged her mother to leave with her.
