Summary
Dasani is on her way to Hershey, Pennsylvania at the beginning of Chapter 28. She enrolls at the Milton Hershey School. Saying goodbye to her family in New York is excruciating. The school itself is like a "modern utopia" (252). All of the students' expenses are covered, and houseparents are hired to oversee 8-12 students in a family home. As Chapter 29 opens, Dasani is having trouble sleeping because she has never slept alone on a mattress. She notices that discipline at the house is strict. One of the most enjoyable tasks for Dasani is picking out her new wardrobe. She picks out pink everything--tees, polos, and socks. This clothing is hers to keep. Suddenly, at the end of Chapter 29, everything changes for the family again. Papa disappears on a freezing winter day and the Administration for Children's Services (ACS) has the family under surveillance...
