Summary
Dasani looks forward to her twelfth summer because summertime is often a time of change for the family. This summer is no exception. In Harlem, where Chanel and Supreme met, the family meets Giant, a former convict turned fitness guru. Giant is impressed by Dasani's natural talent and offers to have her perform with his team, the Bartendaz. Dasani does earn some money doing acrobatics with the team, but unfortunately, Supreme "borrows" much of the money.
Chapter 23 opens on the nightmare of Supreme's childhood. Both parents were addicted to drugs and did not provide even basic care for Supreme and his siblings. Supreme explains that he had no role models whatsoever. As the chapter progresses, Supreme decides to attend a residential rehabilitation program paid for by Medicaid.
