Summary
In Chapter 14, the narrator’s boss—Bettina—takes the narrator out to lunch at a restaurant. Bettina says that the Court wants to offer the narrator a permanent position. The narrator is unsure how to respond. She is not sure that she can handle the stress of translating such traumatic things for a long period of time. Also, she does not have much interest in remaining in The Hague if she is not in a relationship with Adriaan, and her relationship with him seems uncertain. Additionally, the narrator becomes distracted when she notices Anton enter the restaurant. Anton does not see the narrator. Anton sits at a table with a very attractive young woman. Anton is married, but it soon becomes clear to the narrator that Anton and the man are having an affair. Adriaan and the woman even leave their table temporarily, ostensibly...
