Summary
In Chapter 8, the narrator continues to prepare to take over for Amina, as Amina is due to give birth in the near future. The narrator reads and studies the file of the deposed president on trial. The president formed paramilitary groups in an effort to commit genocide in his country. The deposed president apparently still has numerous supporters in his country, some of whom have even come to The Hague to protest for his release. The narrator sits in on a session of the trial, and she is scheduled to translate for part of the session. The narrator is shocked to see that the lead defense lawyer for the defendant is Kees, the acquaintance of Adrian’s she met earlier. The narrator is baffled that any court could take him seriously, as her earlier impression of him was one of childishness and sexual aggression...
