Layla
Layla is the 17-year-old Muslim American first person narrator and protagonist of the novel. Her parents are Ali and Sophia Amin. Together the family lives in the near future reality of Los Angeles, California. Layla is a strong willed, determined, and fiercely courageous young woman. When the United States government begins embracing fascist ideologies that seek to eliminate the liberties and lives of its minority citizens, Layla refuses to remain quiet. Even before she and her family are relocated to Camp Mobius, Layla does not cede to the cultural and social limitations the government has begun inflicting on her people. Though her father has withdrawn her from school, fearing she will face increasingly dangerous harassments, Layla does not stop pursuing her education.
