Summary
In Act V, "Kung Fu Dad," Willis arrives in his daughter Phoebe Wu's new world. She is playing the role of Mei Mei in a show "retelling...the age-old story of immigration, acculturation, assimilation" (188). Phoebe is excited when she sees Willis. Karen is unimpressed by his appearance. A choir of children echo nearly everything Phoebe says. As Willis watches her lead the children, Willis realizes his daughter "is this amazing person" (191). Karen tries explaining how the show works, seemingly blaming Willis for interrupting. Here they are meant to learn about culture together. Then Karen tells Willis that "in this story," they are not together because of the choices he made (192). Phoebe starts singing about the normalcy of divorce.
Then Willis and Karen find a "grown up talking place" in Phoebe Land, where Willis asks her what is happening with this...
