In chapter four, Philippa returns home and confronts her adoptive mother with the truth about her biological parents. Hilda takes terrible verbal abuse from Philippa, but fails to answer her questions with any forcefulness. When Maurice returns home from work, he tells Philippa that they knew who her biological parents were but that they did not tell her to protect her from the truth. When Maurice tells her that Mary Ducton will be released from prison in a few weeks, Philippa announces that she will take a flat in London and spend a few months with her birth mother before going to Cambridge.
