Summary

In "Evening," "Amargo, Arizona Territory, 1893," when Nora does not respond to his offer, Crace again mentions Rob and Dolan's absence, demanding to know if Harlan has revealed the news. Harlan looks guilty. Crace asks about the boys' belief the Sanchez brothers murdered Emmett. Nora feels confused, frustrated Harlan withheld information. Finally Crace says the Lark boys murdered the Sanchez boys to avenge Emmett’s death. Nora cannot believe Crace.

He then shows her a letter from Emmett in California, revealing his intentions never to return. While Nora says Emmett did not write it, she feels that Emmett is dead. While Harlan says he found no evidence of Emmett's death, Crace tells Nora not to trust him; Harlan told her secret about Evelyn's death to his estranged wife and word got out.

Finally the men leave. As they ride away, Nora considers shooting...
