Structure
Inheritance is divided into four parts and fifty chapters. The parts and chapters are all of different lengths, meaning that the book has a varying structure. Part One has eight chapters; Part Two has twenty-one chapters; Part Three has eleven chapters, and Part Four has nine chapters. Because Parts One and Four are of similar length and are notably shorter than Parts Two and Three, they serve as introductory and concluding sections, with Parts Two and Three making up the bulk of the main narrative. Some chapters are very short, only a page or two long, while others span several pages. Overall, however, the chapters tend to err on the shorter side. The shorter chapters keep the pace of the book moving forward.
