Summary
Ben and Dani's scheduled time to meet is right around the Jewish high holidays, which have always carried significance in Dani's life due to her Orthodox upbringing. Dani and Ben continue to correspond in the six weeks leading up to their meeting and they both note how, in Ben's email where he indicated that he wanted to meet, he accidentally misspelled "thoughts" as "thoughtus" (173). As Ben writes to Dani, "Perhaps it was an appropriate slip" (173).
In Chapter 38, Dani asks "What do we inherit, and how, and why?" (175). She feels that she is made of three people: her mother, her father, and Ben Walden. She writes about how she had not seen herself in her father, but how she sees herself in Ben. She feels that there was always a "disjunction of the spirit" in her family and she wonders if Ben...
