Emil
Emil is one of the protagonists and first person narrators of the novel. Until he is 18-years-old, Emil believes he is twin brothers with Brighton, born into normal family to normal parents. However, on the night of his eighteenth birthday, during a fierce battle with a band of specters, Emil learns he has magical powers. Because most specters gain their powers by consuming the blood of innocent magical creatures, Emil fears he has committed a terrible evil of which he has no memory.
However, when Emil, Brighton, and his newly acquired Spell Walker friends press his mother, Carolina, for more information about her son, he learns that he is no normal boy at all.
