Summary
After spending a week in silence, Jenny finally agrees to speak to Thomas. When he reminds her of her given name and explains that Owen is abusing Edith, she informs Thomas that she has no interest in inheriting the house, but suggests that Thomas should bring Edith to the commune to live out the rest of her days. She also offers to sign the building over to Thomas’ name so he can decide what to do with it.
In his anger, Owen begins destroying Adeleine’s apartment. He breaks most of her valuables, throws open the windows, and leaves her there with Edith to pick up the pieces. When Adeleine receives a call from Thomas, she is initially despondent, speaking to him in monosyllables.
