Saul Indian Horse
Saul Indian Horse is the novel’s narrator and protagonist. He is an indigenous Canadian of the Ojibway tribe, and he was born in the early 1950s. As a boy, he lives a semi-nomadic life with his family, as they move from place to place in order to evade the violence and kidnappings perpetrated by white Canadians on native Canadians.
When Saul is eight years old, he is kidnapped by white Canadians and is brought to a Christian missionary school. There, all of the children are native Canadians. The priests and nuns physically and sexually abuse the children. Saul experiences much physical and sexual abuse there, and he witnesses many children die of disease and suicide.
While at the school, Saul falls in love with the sport of hockey. He is highly talented at the game, and it gives him a sense of joy and freedom...
