Warsaw
Several scenes of Indecent are set in Warsaw, the capital city of Poland. At the beginning of Indecent, Warsaw is the home of Sholem Asch, the playwright of "...Vengeance," and the place where it is first performed. At the end of Indecent, Warsaw is the place where a performance of "...Vengeance" is interrupted by the violent arrival of Nazis, who take the actors in the performance prisoner and, as the play suggests, send them to concentration camps.
Eastern Europe
An unnamed Eastern European country is the setting for the events of "...Vengeance." The choice to leave the setting of this narrative undefined is never explained. There is, however, a sense that this choice is part of an intention to portray its events as universal, at least in terms of Jewishness and Eastern European life at the time in which the play is set.
