Summary
As the scene continues, there is what the author calls “A Blink in Time,” and the action moves forward into the next scene, which is titled “In the Midst of Act One.” There is a ripple of excitement among the men as Peretz uses the words “whorehouse” and “whore” (15). There is another “Blink in Time,” and the action moves into the next scene, which is titled “Act Two: The First Rain Scene.” Asch reads stage directions indicating that the two female characters are wearing nightgowns and are soaking wet. He asks Nakhmen to speak in a higher voice as he reads one of the parts.
Nakhmen angrily throws the script aside, calling it “garbage” as he realizes he is playing a woman saying loving things to another woman (16). Asch gives the script to Lemml, who is uncomfortable saying the word “breasts” (16) but...
