Summary
Sam’s mother, Irene, stays the night at the house with them. They have to clean up her old room so there’s room for her and the baby. Sam is reminded her mother just left everything when she married her new husband, Lorenzo Jones. Sam is awake in the middle of the night thinking about her mother and she hears baby Heather crying. She goes downstairs to find her mother spoon feeding the baby. Sam and her mother have a conversation about Lonnie and college, and Emmett. Sam also asks about a hippie, Bon, that Irene dated when Sam was three. Irene wants Sam to go to college and leave Hopewell. She wants her to come live in her new house with her husband and Heather.
