Section 6: pages 48-58 Summary
The Captain beckons to Monceau who takes his papers out of his jacket and cheerfully greets the Captain as he enters the office. The boy reminds Von Berg where his mother lives, asking if this applies to him since he is a minor. When the Captain beckons to the boy, the boy says he will not be fifteen until February and can get his birth certificate to prove it, but the Captain simply urges him into the office. The Old Jew prays softly as he rocks back and forth. With only the Old Jew, Leduc and himself remaining, Von Berg turns to Leduc and expresses the wish that they had met under other circumstances as there are many things he would like to ask Leduc.
