Who were the immediate members of Bobi's family when she was a child? What were the roles of those people in her life?

Bobi, the author and narrator of this book, was born in a “holler” in rural Kentucky and grew up with an abusive father, an ineffectual and indifferent mother, and a younger brother who was no more able to stand up for them than Bobi. Their father was brutal in his verbal and physical abuse toward Bobi, Junior, and their mother. While her mother was not physically abusive, she suffered her husband's abuse and was never able to stand up for the children. Bobi's paternal and maternal grandparents were all kind people and she spent a lot of time with her paternal grandparents, Granny and Papaw Conn. With only one exception, Granny never stood up for the children though she apparently knew the situation.

What was the role of education in Bobi's life, including the role it played in allowing her to escape the cycles of abuse and poverty that dominated many families in her childhood home?
