Summary

Chapter 4 is titled “Sunday Morning.” Despite attending church, praying, and being baptized at age nine, she constantly felt something was wrong. She again recalled the boy who molested her when she was five, saying she was not certain how far the attack went. As a teenager, she saw him with his wife and baby and hoped he had changed. She walked to the altar repeatedly, hoping to feel a change in her life. She noted that they were poor with very limited food, but that they were poor in other ways as well. Bobi remembered the day she decided to obey her father to call Granny a whore, and felt she had traded away something vital of herself that day, though it was an impossible choice.
