The first part of the novel is set in Brooklyn, where the three central characters make their home. Populated by different ethno-cultural communities within the larger area of the city, Brooklyn was once one of the less wealthy, less savory parts of the city, but over the past several decades has become one of the most wealthy and most populous parts of New York City as a whole.
