Summary
Lucia, Richard, Evelyn: Upstate New York. After making their way back to the cabin and scraping together a rough meal Richard, Lucia, and Evelyn (and Marcelo) go to bed. Evelyn is asleep almost immediately, but Richard and Lucia remain awake, talking well into the night, each realizing how much the other has suffered, each confessing their love for each other, and each realizing how healing that love can be. During their conversation, Richard reveals (in dialogue) what happened to Anita: 25 years of “‘your soul in winter and your heart locked away” (306). Richard is doubtful, but their mutual confessions of love and longing make him feel like can at least begin to try, and the two of them make love. Narration comments on how, in the following years, Lucia embellished the story to the point that what she describes seemed impossible, but still true...
