Summary

Ngũgĩ spends the night in a large cell with the other detainees. In Chapter 61 Good Wallace brings bread—without family bringing food, prisoners do not eat—and assures Ngũgĩ he is working towards his release. When it is Ngũgĩ’s turn to visit the commander, he pleads his case in English and shows his exam grades and acceptance letter to Makerere. He is freed, but before he gets to the gate, the arresting police officer tells the commander he resisted arrest, and he is sent back. The prisoners are sent to Kiambu Remand Prison.

In Chapter 62 his cellmates are amazed to find an Alliance student has been arrested. Most of the other cellmates have been caught in the act of robbery. An argument erupts between the robbers expressing how courageous they are and an elderly man who tells them courage...
