Summary

Ngũgĩ joins another multiracial camp in west Limuru, but only he and an Indian youth shows up. The Indian leaves, and Ngũgĩ is left alone with the two instructors, who, while teaching survival skills, often got into heated arguments about colonialism and the treatment of Kenyans. Ngũgĩ also leaves. In Chapter 48 readers learn Alliance accepts students from all ethnic groups in Kenya despite the government’s policy of dividing them. Ngũgĩ becomes a prefect his dorm in 1957. His most difficult leadership task is to curtail the smokers, and he prefers discussion and community involvement rather than punishment. In Chapter 49 Ngũgĩ becomes chair of the Inter-Tribal Society where students share leadership and organization designs of different communities in Kenya.
