Point of View

The novel is written in third person. In some scenes, the perspective is very limited. For example, the opening scene introduces the idea that Jesse and Corky tease Jimmy. The reader sees this only from Jimmy's perspective. At the end of the novel, Jesse and Corky again confront Jimmy. This time, the scene is slightly more omniscient, which means the reader knows Jesse and Corky are taking note that Jimmy has grown some and has become more confident. That perspective is still relatively limited because the reader does not know what Jesse and Corky think about the situation.

The majority of the novel takes place during a trip Jimmy and Nyles take across the region where Crazy Horse lived. The perspective remains limited in those sections. The reader is aware of the dialogue between Nyles and Jimmy and some of Jimmy's thoughts are revealed. The...
