Jimmy McClean

Jimmy is a Lakota boy who lives with his parents on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation. His father is James McClean Sr. who is the son of an Indian woman and a Scottish father. His mother is Anne Little Eagle McClean who is Lakota. This means Jimmy is three-quarters Lakota and one-quarter Scottish. Jimmy seems to embrace his Lakota heritage even in the early part of this novel, but he is also struggling because his appearance and name set him apart from his Lakota peers. Jimmy seems to lack confidence at school when face with the two bullies, though he seems confident in the rest of his life. He clearly loves nature, especially considering he does not need to work at fitting in when he is in the woods.
