Summary

Chapter 5 is titled “The Tongue River Valley.” Jimmy asked why the battle at Fort Kearny was called the Battle of the Hundred in the Hands. Nyles explains that a holy man had said “the warriors were holding one hundred in the hands.” He said the term “in the hands” meant a victory for the warriors. The holy man had predicted 100, which was very close to the 80 soldiers who were actually involved.

He learned to hunt here, and he used his skills to provide for families in the tribe who did not have a hunter – widows or older people. No one told him to do this – he simply took on the task.
