Summary
Chapter 4 is titled “The Bozeman Trail.” Nyles says the highway they are traveling across Wyoming – Interstate 25 – is roughly the same trail marked out by John Bozeman in 1860 which led directly through Lakota territory. The Powder River Road, used by the Lakota people, existed before that. They stop at the site of the former Fort Reno army fort to give Jimmy a chance to think of Crazy Horse's experiences here. At the Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site, they find dioramas depicting the history of the fort. A nearby monument gives details about a battle on the site. Nyles says, “We call it the Battle of the Hundred in the Hands. The whites call it the Fetterman Battle. Some even call it the Fetterman Massacre” (49).
