Summary
As Håkan continues east with the pack mule, he eventually comes across a discarded dresser and mirror, likely left by a traveling homesteader. Håkan looks in the mirror and, having not seen his own face since Clangston, is surprised by the changes in his facial features, which have become harder and more mature. He continues east, and the landscape becomes a prairie. He passes the graves of traveling settlers and feels sadness. He continues on and eventually sees a traveling caravan of settles. In Chapter 11, Håkan speaks to members of the caravan, wishing to trade for a horse, but none are willing. Eventually, a man named Jarvis Pickett approaches Håkan.
