Summary
In Chapter 12, Tracy goes to see Earl Kanasket, Kimi's father, who now lives on the Indian reservation. He opens the door in a wheelchair. Tracy introduces herself, and Earl agrees to talk about Kimi. He says he never believed she committed suicide. Tracy says Buzz may not have believed it either. Tracy asks if Earl knows about the clearing that Buzz so carefully photographed. He says there are “bad spirits” of the “dead who are not at rest” (Location 1570) in that clearing. He recounts the story of Henry Timmerman, an innocent man who was hanged there. His final words were a pledge to burn Stoneridge to the ground. A month later, many of the town's buildings burned with no apparent cause. The trees in that place died, creating the clearing, and now nothing grows there. Elan arrives, interrupting the meeting. He is furious...
