Yeonmi Park
Yeonmi Park is the narrator of this autobiography in which she tells the story of her life in North Korea, her experiences in China, and her escape to freedom in South Korea.
Yeonmi lived in North Korea until she was 13. Because there was so little promise for her life and her family was so hungry all the time, she, her mother, and her older sister decided to escape to China where they believed they could get jobs. Yeonmi told her mother she wanted to stay in China even after they learned they would be sold and become wives to Chinese men.
In China, Yeonmi was the wife of Hongwei only because he promised to reunite her family. She helped him with his business and later went on to work in an adult chat room.
