How is parenthood depicted in the work?
Amy’s view of parenthood is protective and unselfish. Her relationship with Brian began later in life but her children grew attached to him and helped her to process her grief and loneliness. She wants to protect them from his death, despite them already being adults, and she struggles to allow her sons to help her explore backup plans when it is unclear whether Dignitas will help them. Amy has a clear separation between her identity as a wife and that of a mother because her children are exclusively hers, not really shared with Brian despite their close relationship.
