Summary

Deven arrives at Nur’s home having planned to get there at a time when there would be few people present. He is disappointed to find that the courtyard is full of people, but relieved that the house itself is relatively empty. He makes his way to Nur’s dark, quiet sitting room, which is again referenced as having green tiled walls. Deven is at first again overwhelmed by his good fortune at being so close to such a great man. “How was it possible,” the narration comments, “not to become a chela, a disciple, when in the presence of such an undeniable guru?” (111). He attempts to get Nur to agree to the interview. Nur is preoccupied, however, with thoughts and worry about the illness of Imtiaz.
