Throughout the book, different characters leave their homes in an attempt to find something better, or to reinvent themselves, but they end up being assaulted—politically, spiritually, and physically—by foreign forces, and they are reminded directly that they are outsiders.Any immigrant’s journey prompts him to seek out a better life, either because the past no longer exists or his sights are sight on a future that always seems to be out of reach.
