Steamer

The boat the unnamed narrator travels on from Piraeus to Alexandria. The steamer is divided in two, with the upper half of the boat receiving larger accommodations, while the lower part is reserved for refugees who receive only sleeping space. The steamer is where the tramp is harassed by the Lebanese, while the narrator watches from a distance instead of intervening.

Washington, D.C is Santosh's home after Bombay, and where he acquires his freedom from his old employer. The strangeness of the new city, including the relative freedom of African-Americans, overwhelms Santosh.
