Unnamed Narrator of Journal

The central character of both the Prologue and Epilogue, the unnamed narrator spends the majority of his time observing his surroundings, with the clear distinction that he is not a native and just passing through. His tone is neutral for the most part, and he does not seem to be involved emotionally with the events unfolding around him, until his hand is forced in Luxor with the Italian's cruel game. Even then, he feels the unwanted attention that he receives as a result of his intervention, and he is uncomfortable with it, preferring to blend in with the crowd.

While it is a first-person narrator, the reader is not subject to many of his personal thoughts or prejudices, with the only personal information being a quick mention of being from Asia when he sees the Chinese circus men in Milan. Perhaps he is an autobiographical...
