Summary
Santosh tells his story from the present as an American citizen in Washington D.C, remembering how he had arrived in the city in the first place. He lived in Bombay, India as the cook of a civil officer. He lived a happy life among his friends, with whom he was happy to sleep on the street despite having a sleeping space available. Despite having a wife and children in a distant village, Santosh had grown used to the luxuries of his life.
