Point of View
The novel consists of multiple points of view. The main perspectives belong to Christopher and Kate Reese. Christopher is the protagonist of the novel, so it makes sense for the reader to experience the bulk of the narrative from his perspective. But this narrative does not just belong to any one character. Community is of central importance to the novel, along with the notion that no one person can succeed on their own, without the support of the people around them, whether family or friends or neighbors.
Kate Reese is the other central protagonist. She is Christopher's mother. Their bond is one of the most important keys to the plot. Their love for each other saves them multiple times.
